The basic’s for a Purposeful Christian Life.
Purpose is described in the dictionary as ‘something set up as an object or end to be attained’. I believe God created each person with ‘an end to be attained’. A purpose. Most people go through life wondering what their life means and spend an amazing amount of time and money trying all sorts of things hoping to discover the ‘meaning of life’. They are in fact looking for their purpose. Whether you like it or not, the only place to find your purpose is in the God of the bible and through total submission to Him.
The bible is full of stories of men and women, in both the Old and the New Testament, who found meaning as they submitted their lives to God. It is God’s plan for every man and women to enjoy their lives as they fulfil His will.I think the beginning point in understanding that you were created with a purpose is to understand the implications of John 10:10.
The thief comes not but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I am come that they might have life, and might have it abundantly.
There are three very important words used in this verse, have, life and abundantly. The word have is translated from the Greek word ‘echo’ which means ‘to hold or to possess’. It is a primary verb meaning it is a word of action. Life comes from the Greek word ‘zoe’ which means life, but comes from the verb meaning live. The implication here, I believe, is that we are to actively and passionately grab hold of Christ and all He is and has in order for us to have life. But not just any life. He says ‘more abundantly’. This is where it gets really exciting because the Greek word translated here as abundantly means so much more than just more abundantly. This word is ‘perissos’ which means superabundance in quantity or superior in quality. It means by implication excessive. This is talking about life. That means here and now. You don’t have to wait until you die to enjoy abundant life. Matthew Henry says that “Christ came to give life and something more, something better, life with advantage. That in Christ we might not only live, but live comfortably, live in plentiful.” Let me caution you, this is not a license to pursue pure financial gain, thinking that an increase in wealth automatically carries the blessing of God on it. No, what we are to pursue is the purposeful life that God has planned and thought of for us. Pursuit of this plan will always lead to people turning to Christ and not away from Him. Blessing will follow you pursuing Him not you pursuing blessing. Matthew 6:32-33 says that if we seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, He will add to us all the things we need. We will look at the type of people God chooses, how to discover your purpose and how to live you purpose with passion. Come with me on this amazing journey of discovery and see your life and the lives of people you interact with change. Transformation is yours to have. Grab it with both hands. The Latin poet, Horace, penned the words ‘Carpe Diem’. They have been translated as meaning ‘Seize the day’. It appears that the words ‘Gather the day’ are a more correct translation. I believe that it is God’s will for each of us to grab hold of everyday and everything that is in it and to use it to glorify Him by fulfilling our purpose each day.
